Natural Media: Vortrag von Gastwissenschaftlerin Dr. Pamela Perniss

Dr. Pamela Perniss vom MPI Nijmegen und University College London hält am 26. April 2012 um 16.15 Uhr im Rahmen der Veranstaltung "Kolloquium zu Störungen der Kommunikation und Kognition" einen Vortrag zum Thema "The role of the visual modality in shaping language structure: Insights from sign language and gesture".

Der Vortrag wird im Hörsaal 5 des Universitätsklinikums der RWTH Aachen, Pauwelsstr. 30, 52074 Aachen, stattfinden.

Kurzzusammenfassung:

Communicative expression in the visual modality, using the hands and body as primary articulators in a visible space, is unique in affording a high degree of visual iconicity (e.g. of shape, location, and motion) and a directly embodied representation of experience (e.g. of bodily action). These affordances have been claimed to determine how such information is expressed in the visual modality, predicting similarities between sign language and co-speech gesture, as the two main modes of visual communication, as well as between different sign languages (Aronoff et al. 2003; Liddell 2003). However, few comparative studies – particularly using the same task and in communicative, discourse contexts – have directly investigated how the modality shapes communicative expression. In this talk, I present studies that investigate modality-specific effects on language structure by comparing across different sign languages and between sign language and co-speech gesture, crucially taking into account the different constraints imposed by using the visual modality within a two-channel (speech plus co-speech gesture) vs. a one-channel (sign) system.
