Cluster of Excellence "Internet of Production
The Internet - in its meaning as a worldwide socio-technical network - has revoluntionized the availability of data and knowledge. With the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), the idea was transferred to the physical world. The direct application of the IoT approach to production is currently not possible in a target-oriented manner, as production technology is characterized by considerably more parameters but less available data than other Big Data domains. Although large amounts of data are available in modern production technology, they are neither easily accessible, interpretable, nor networked in such a way that knowledge can be generated from them. The Internet of Production (IoP) is based on the vision of enabling a new level of cross-domain collaboration by making semantically adequate and contextual data from production, development and use available in real time and adapted granularity.
As part of the third round of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments to promote cutting-edge research in Germany as a center of higher education and science, funding was approved for the follow-up application of the Cluster of Excellence "Internet of Production" at RWTH Aachen University.
