The teaching and research area of Applied Ethics and Ethics of Technology of the RWTH Aachen University under the direction of Prof. Dr. Saskia Nagel helps to realize an integrated interdisciplinary technical university and performs a bridging function at the RWTH Aachen University. The group addresses questions about the ethical and social challenges of scientific and technological progress. It develops the interdisciplinary potential between philosophy and the natural and engineering sciences. Key topics are the philosophy and ethics of the human-technology relationship. This includes ethical and social issues in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Internet of Things, Emerging Medical Technologies, e.g. e-health, new biotechnologies - and the impact on individual and social well-being.
- University degree (Master or equivalent) and / or dissertation in Philosophy and / or Applied Ethics and / or Interdisciplinary Studies, with a specialization in Philosophy / Ethics.
- Pronounced knowledge in Applied Ethics and / or Practical Philosophy
- Experience in interdisciplinary work
- Good analytical skills
- Good IT-skills
- Very good proficiency in English (oral and written)
- Ability to independent scientific work
- Responsibility, creativity, flexibility, team orientation
- Interest in policy and the practical applications of ethics
- Willingness to teach in various degree programs on issues of applied ethics
- Previous work has already been presented at conferences
- Competence in ethical theory
- Experiences with reflection on current developments in the field of human-technology interaction, medical technologies, or artificial intelligence
- Interest to develop competences in methods of empirical social research or empirical philosophy

The position is part of the ELSA-AID project which is a cooperation of partners from ethics, medicine and AI: In the ELSA-AID project, the key objective is a sensitive analysis of ethical, social, and professional issues of AI-aided diagnostics as part of precision medicine in the clinic. This should facilitate understanding its impact on physicians of different specialties and their relation to patients, laying the foundation for a health care environment, which builds a synergy of human expertise and capacities and artificial intelligence. The results with concrete means will carve a path to patient-physician-AI-interaction in diagnosis building on mutual trust and transparent roles and responsibilities, leading to improved standards of care.
The main objective of your work is to explore the ethical impact of AI in diagnosis on the patient-physician relationship and discuss new understandings of responsibilities and trust in human-AI-systems.
You will be entrusted with tasks in the project that focus on the ethical questions in close cooperation with partners in medicine and medical technology development, as well as with further tasks in research and teaching. This includes assistance in teaching and work in the research areas of Applied Ethics. We expect you to publish research results in international, competitive journals.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and for 3 years.
This is a full-time position. It is also available as part-time employment per request.
The salary corresponds to level E 13 TV-L.
